City of Mississauga

City of Mississauga Website

The Challenge

City of Mississauga’s previous website wasn’t user friendly, had dated aesthetics, and was not accessible, falling way short of the WCAG standards of that time.

The Remedy

The Web Specialist, Digital Strategy & Experience Team kicked-off the highly collaborative process of modernizing the website by holding workshops and gathering feedback from multiple internal stakeholders across a variety of departments and city residents. This step surfaced a variety of pain points from the old website and business requirements for the new website.

After analyzing the findings, issues and solutions were prioritized which then led to a lengthy, multi-phase development process with internal developers and external vendors. A mobile first philosophy was adopted by the team throughout the project and the following remedies were implemented:

  • Making the site responsive for mobile devices
  • Designing a cleaner, easier to use interface
  • Organizing content and creating an intuitive and easy to navigate site architecture
  • Meeting existing WCAG 2.0 standards
  • Developing and maintaining a design system
  • Modernizing the request process for content edits and feature requests

The Result

The newly redesigned website received praise from the public, with users highlighting the intuitive navigation, structured and streamlined aesthetic, improved readability, and a much improved mobile user experience. The new design philosophy also set the City on a path toward innovation and sustainability.
