Gotta Be Big Productions

The project

Gotta Be Big Productions needed an impactful, eye-catching promotional piece to advertise their inaugural event. The purpose was to advertise a nostalgic, vinyl-only event that celebrates classic dance music from Toronto’s club culture spun by two of the city’s best DJs: Jason Palma and Mark Oliver. The project deliverables included: a video flyer, social media banner, and profile photo.

The solution

The look drew inspiration from 50s and 60s jazz covers and added a contemporary twist with the typography. Combining photos with bold, sharp colours against a black background reminiscent of darkly lit clubs and warehouse parties with fonts that have bulbous curves and eclectic aesthetic. This gave the piece impact while giving it a sense of unpretentious, playful nostalgia.

The use of a disco ball and a record player was intended to appeal to the sentimental dancefloor memories of the legacy crowd. In addition, using photos of Technics 1200 turntables was also deliberate. By using images of turntables that were a DJ gear staple of that era further emphasizes that it is a throwback, vinyl only event full of music from an era that seasoned club goers will remember.
